Date Posted: August 21, 2023 Req ID: 33569 Faculty/Division: Faculty of Arts & Science Department: Sociology Campus: St. George Description: SOC313H1F - Social Control This course examines how society has gone about controlling specific types of deviants (e. g. gang members, interaction and drug offenders) and acts of deviance (e. g. organized crime, the deviance of social control agents). In examining these individuals and acts, attention is also directed to why they are defined as deviant and sanctioned, and why some types of deviance are less likely to be detected and sanctioned than others. Finally, consideration is also given to a range of sanctions that have been used to control deviance and the empirical evidence on their effectiveness. Estimated Enrollment: 130 students Estimated TA Support: 100 hours Class Schedule: Fridays, 11-1. The delivery method for this course is in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the Department. Sessional dates of Appointment: September 1, 2023 – December 31, 2023 Salary: Sessional Lecturers I - $ 9,457.90 Sessional Lecturers (Long Term) - $ 9,930.79 Sessional Lecturers II - $10,121.77 Sessional Lecturers II (Long Term) - $10,326.62 Sessional Lecturers III - $10,362.76 Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) - $10,570.02 Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. Minimum qualifications: Ph D in Sociology required (or equivalent as demonstrated by refereed, published research). Strong academic record in area required. Preferred qualifications: Superior undergraduate teaching at the university level directly related to the area is strongly preferred.
