CSS is seeking a qualified candidate to provide science support to the NCCOS Charleston Coral Health and Disease Program assisting in experiments in a laboratory role. The scope of experiments is expected to include sea urchin fertilization and embryo development toxicity assays and coral turbidity exposure-responses. For sea urchin tests the incumbent will assist with assay set-up, recognizing and scoring either fertilization success or embryological developmental abnormalities that may result from exposure to sediment porewaters. The scoring will be supported with photomicrographs of representative conditions that result from the exposure studies. For turbidity assays the incumbent will assist with taking water quality measurements using a multi-meter at scheduled timepoints during experiments. The toxicity assays will provide data and reports in support of NOAA projects. This position is a part-time (20 h/week) one year assignment from approximately July 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024 located at the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC. Education: The incumbent should hold at minimum, a Bachelor's degree in one of the biological sciences. Requirements: The incumbent assists in assay set-up and gathering data resulting from the exposure studies. The incumbent will help organize photomicrographs into figures for publication and summarize data under the general guidance of the principal investigator who establishes the basic goals of the research project and will assist project lab staff as needed. The work output relies primarily on light microscopy; thus, the incumbent must be able to work at a microscope continuously for extended periods of time during the work period (e.g., 3-4 h/day). Initial training in the use of the specific microscope and identification of embryonic screening of the Lytechinus sea urchin will be provided by experienced lab staff. In addition, the incumbent will be trained to use multimeter with probes to take water quality measurements during experiments, such as pH, temperature, salinity and turbidity. The incumbent assists in the routine lab operations and helps keep the laboratory safe and orderly. The incumbent should be able to document findings in the form of laboratory notebook records, electronic data files and reports which may be used for presentations or publications; and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The incumbent shall keep accurate written records of all methods, procedures, and experimental results, documents observations of unusual or abnormal appearance, and prepares data reports. Ensures the availability of adequate laboratory supplies and maintains an orderly and safe work environment related to assigned tasks. All work is conducted under the supervision of a principal scientific investigator. Equipment, vehicles, boats, and facilities at the NOAA National Ocean Service, NCCOS at Charleston will be used for this assignment by the incumbent. All government equipment, including vehicles, boats, computers, telephone access, etc., is to be used to accomplish official government business only. Deliverables: Provide raw and summarized data from sea urchin fertilization and development toxicity testing of sediment porewaters from various study areas and include photographs of typical development of sea urchins for each of the samples. Provide raw and summarized data from coral turbidity experiments. CSS is predominantly a Federal Contractor and is subject to following the terms of Executive Orders.
